Forbidden Knowledge Overview  |  FK Triggers  |  Writing an Occult Text

Below is a list of spells (in no particular order) and items I think might fit well with the Forbidden Knowledge scheme. This are not in any way an exhaustive list, but rather a jumping-off point. Use these ideas as you see fit. Be sure to email me with your spell triggers if you'd like them posted here (along with how you'd like to be credited), and don't forget to always post your new material on the Runesword Message Board. I'm just trying to help spur resource and Tome development. I got most of the ideas below from looking through my collection of Mythos CCG cards and my Cthulhu Mythos library. If you have any suggestions, comments, etc. email me.

Call [Diety] - Joseph Curwen has suggesting the following, based on Call of Cthulhu : Call [Diety] spells summon a Mythos deity to you. It is not bound in any way, and it is not answerable to its caller (knowing the Call spell will enable you to dispell the deity as well, which is really the only use that PCs have for them). They normally have very elaborate preperations, and I've found that it's best to use these preperations as a starting point for adventures (I'm going from memory because I don't have any of my books, but a good example is 'Call Hastur the Unspeakable'...the caster must erect five or six stone/concrete pillars that contain at least x amount of mass, are at least y feet tall. Additionally, they need to be three states apart and the spell must be cast when Aldeberan is in the night sky). If the PCs can dynamite one of the pillars, the threat to our planet is averted till next time. While the spell itself might not be too great for RS, it would make a great adventure idea.

Summon [Mythos Creature] - (This idea comes to us from Call of Cthulhu, suggested by 'Joseph Curwen'.) This is a common variety of spells found in Occult Texts which summons one Mythos-related creature which is bound to follow one command from the caster. The creature then returns to wherever it came from. In RS implimentation, I think it would be primarily for summoning combat aid, and it might be interesting to add a 'bind to caster's will' roll (ala Remortification). We wouldn't want to make things easy, now would we...?

Amulet of the Deep Ones : makes Deep Ones stronger.

Create Star Stone of M'Nar - Creates a Star Stone capable of warding off or slowing down Mythos-related creatures.

Absorb the Soul - (requires FK skill level 3) PC gains the skills of the victim.

Bind ID - (requires FK skill level 2) Caster adds victim's offensive abilities to a weapon in a manner similar to Transfer Resistance..

Urn of Essential Salts - 'resurrects' a creature using it's fundamental physical elements. Acts as random summoning from a list of creatures. Would need a spell to cast on the salts to reconstitute - suggesting a related spell to reduce a creature to it's essential salts.

Hands of Colubra - hand-to-hand attack of 'magical' energy. If hit, the victim's strength and very life (HP) are drained for several turns.

Dread Curse of Azathoth - The victim is momentarily bathed in the nuclear fires of Azathoth

Eibon's Wheel of Mist - reduce target's attack

Dominate - command target

Cloud Memory - block skill use

Call Power of Nyambe - caster drains and absorbs victim's Lunacy

Become Spectral Hunter - target is invisible and gains enhanced attacks (possibly vs. Mind instead of Defense)

The Brazen Head - an ancient embalmed human head believed to have belonged to a long-fogotten sorcerer. When used, the Head will offer one of its secrets. Such an experience tends to shake one's hold on reality.

Mist of R'Lyeh - target becomes invisible.

Nyhargo Dirge - powerful chant deadly to undead

Pipes of Madness - (spell)

Powder of Ibn Ghazi - negates certain types of invisibility

Remortification - during combat, raise creatures from the dead to fight for the caster.

Sarnath Sigil - reduce attacks of Mythos creatures

Shriveling - weaken target

Sign of Barzai - Disable target. Those near the target may also be affected by viewing the Sign.

Sign of Eibon - (attack spell) -Soul Signing - gain sanity if cast during a full moon

Summon Minions of Cthugha - This powerful spell summons the "fire elemental" demi-god Cthugha and his Fire Vampires to attack a target creature. Those too near such an attach can often be hurt as well as by this violent conflagration. (Note that, while Lovecraft and most of those who subsequently added to his Mythos never intended any sort of elemental affiliations, August Derleth attempted to categorize the pantheon as such in his writings. Hence the quotation marks.)

Transfer Resistance - This is the first idea that started all of this. The caster binds the soul of a creature to a piece of armor, giving the armor the defensive characteristics of the creature. The target is sacrificed in the process, and the caster not only is left near death himself but also looses a bit of his hold on reality. Powerful, but at great cost. *completed*

The 666 Essays of the Damned

This is not actually an occult text but rather a colletion of volumes containing the secrets of powerfull witches and scorcerers as communicated through a medium's nightmares. Each volume is bound in human skin, each page is written in the blood of the medium, and the front cover bears the skull of the scorcerer whose secrets it contains. Noone has reported seeing an entire set of the Essays, though according to legend the mad scorcerer Alhazred had one. As the various volumes are scattered throughout the world (and possibly beyond) there is no index or guide to its contents. The few details known follows:

Volume 13 is known to contain the spell Hands of Colubra as a lengthy discussion of the scorcerer Colubra's theories on the draining effects each sphere of reality is beleived to have.

Volume 20 is titled "The Scribblings of Barzai". It contains much of that scorcerer's research into runes and channeling power through them. Characters can learn The Sign of Barzai.

Volume 73 is known to contain the spell Remortification. The bulk of the Essay describes creatures called the Hounds of Tindalos. These Things are the embodiment of foulness, and lust after something of the pureness found in a Human soul. Once they have caught such a scent, only death will stop the Hounds from following it, even across dimensions of time and space.

Volume 74 is known to contain the spell Summon Minions of Cthulgha. This Essay details the history of Cthugha, the Great Old One who takes the form of a huge airborne conflagration.
