Rune-Fu

One of my Runesword projects is the development of a new set of skills related to the martial arts. I am currently working on a system for playing martial arts combat for Runesword. Please send your comments to heeznow@msn.com.

My martial arts arts skill system is called Rune-fu. It will be comprised of a set of trigger and creature files. Also I will document how to use the system to build Rune-fu skills along the same lines as new martial arts were created for AD&D Oriental Adventures. My system is not the same as theirs, but I am using it as one source. Other influences will be noted.

Creating a Rune-fu martial art

A Rune-fu martial art is defined by the following:

  • Style: Hard (+1 attack), Soft (+1 defense), hard/soft
  • Method: Kick, Punch, Mental and Physical Training, Weapons Kata, Preasure Point Strikes.
  • Maneuvers: combinations of attacks and their stances that define different moves. An art should have up to 8 manuevers, with 5 comming from attacks of its method.
  • Descripton: A short discussion of what groups use this art and any philosophical notes on it.

~ Stances ~

There are 4 levels of stances:
Celestial - rare and difficult to learn, often requiring a high level of mastery in its particlar art. Each Celestial stance is unique to a fighting style, and in its advantages and draw-backs.
One-mind stances: (+2, +1, 0) These draw on the integration of other stances.
Saintly stances: (+3, 0, 0) mastered only by experiened martial artists, these focus on the perfection of one state of mind.
Earthly stances: (+1, 0, -1) These are basic stances taught to novitiates.

~ The Nine Stances ~

The Nine Stances form the foundation of Rune-fu arts. Each attack will end with the character set in a stance. Each stance has a different effect on a character's defense, attack and action points. In this way Rune-fu will stress the strategy of martial arts and force the player to choose their attacks wizely. The Nine Stances form the most common positions from which martial artists can attack. In addition, there may be other, rarer stances

When assigning a stance to an attack, try to maintain game balance by having less stance property bonuses for stronger attacks.

~ Maneuvers ~

Maneuvers are gained one at a time upon raising the charcter's skill level. Special abilities, such as Healing Hands or Deflect Arrows, that are not attack moves may also be available at the rate of one per skill level.

Suggestions for different attacks to use in creating maneuvers follow, organized by their Methods:
